Thank you all - very helpful. No sign of an electronic unit behind the steering column or of an hydraulic one in the engine bay, and the dealer that supplied the car new has no record of ordering or fitting power steering. We are checking further, but it may have been misleadingly advertised.
I see some mistakes in Dealers ads for Mogs that are frankly laughable for main dealers, I assume the dreaded copy/paste often contributes
Hope you get a satisfactory resolution, as it would be very rare for a 3.0 to have PAS (even the early 3.7's although in the spec, didn't get it)
