There are several people at my work, young mostly, who don’t own a car and use Uber for their daily commute. I suspect they’ve got this right from a costs perspective. Car ownership is costly and a hassle.
Their great ideas fail when they and their partner have children. Suddenly public transport becomes a real pain. What they may buy into is shared vehicle on demand, but in both cases they won't want to live in city centres that discriminate against cars.
