In the early 1990s I was a judge for the National Motor Museum (Beaulieu) Concours events. Some of the fun elements included checking with a torch and mirror behind the pedals to make sure there was no dust, ensuring the pile on carpets all faced the same way, and that there were no blades of grass in the tyre treads. After a couple of seasons I kinda gave up as I echoed your views about life being (a bit) too short, and besides I couldn't afford the therapy. But the bug had bitten, so I do like all my screw heads to line-up, clean the inside of the door locks and the petrol filler cap, and I carry a clothes brush in the car to keep the hood looking pristine.
