Hi Leroy,
Usually the handle (shank) goes through the rose and is secured to it by a circlip. The shank is not flush with the rose back, it will protrude about 8mm and will have a square hole to accommodate the spindle. Obviously you need a larger hole in the door to accommodate the shank. Best of luck.
