ok I know this is a revival of a VERY old thread so apologies.....I have just got some new mirrors and have the same grey plug to stop the rattling. I only see a screw to retain the mirror position, I don't see one that releases the stem from the base. I want to swap to round mirrors so need to remove the oval ones. Can someone help me with this? I see the groove in the grey plug through the retaining screw hole but not much else. Many thanks

Back the screw off (or remove) squirt a bit of WD40 around the stem & give the mirror stem a good twist & pull, it's usually reluctant due to corrosion sticking it together, then when its apart remove the grey plugs and clean everything up before re-assembly

Sometimes if fitting new Round style mirrors the hole in the plug needs carefully reaming out with a sharp drill as they are slightly larger diameter stems
