I tried to learn it as a child. Didn't take long to realise I was sufficiently tone deaf that it was a total waste of time...
My sister, OTOH, was pretty good playing French Horn in school orchestra, including the solo piece in the annual concert one year, Mozart - a tune I will never forget (doesn't mean I can remember the name of the piece though!). She played a lot of other instruments too, though we can't find her Mandolin, which seems to have vanished when Mum moved from Gloucestershire.
As for kits - I used to make a number during my seafaring years, now I tend to just stick to the electronics or radio variety - something I will use. Doesn't stop
buying me a very occasional car one though...
