During the late seventies when we worked in West Germany for 3 years undertaking was quite common and appeared to be acceptable at the time OOI.
If that means passing a car on the right side on a motorway: That is not common today.
A large problem nowadays is, that a lot driver think, that the right lane is reserved for lorries (only).
If memory serves me well HGV's were not allowed on the motorways on the Sunday unless they were carrying perishable goods - some of our German colleagues might like to say how it is nowadays ?
