Hi Bryan, some folk find the steering so light after fitting top bearings they leave the original damper blades in as well which can mask other issues. Seems counter-intuitive to me but each to their own. It would however explain your findings.
I was quite underwhelmed when I fitted my sifab steering bearings. It was the torsion type and found little to no difference. I think the rebound spring is under quite a bit of pressure so am going to get some wolf performance torsion bearings to sit on top of the rebound spring to see if that helps.
If you already had upper steering bearings as with Bryan the OP, I would not expect any difference at all after fitting alternative steering bearings.
Re the lower ones offered by Cain, I've had them fitted for most of the cars life and before fitting the SSL RS kit. I noticed the improvement literally as I left his drive and retained them after fitting RS kit. I have very light but most importantly quick steering should a bend tighten unexpectedly.
Under many circumstances with a correctly set up front end (zero static pre-load on rebound spring) the bearings are under minimal/no load but in a corner as the inner wheel is unloaded they make a very noticeable difference.
