Looks like a shoe-string project (and none the worse for that ... there's a long tradition of penniless special builders) ... but have to agree regarding the seat choice ... they may have been at the back of the shed or super cheap on ebay ... but something basic and more 'period' could be knocked up for pennies and be much more appropriate.
