Suggest checking for power (+12 volts) from ignition switch onwards. There should be a white wire from this feeding a fuse which in turn feeds instruments either direct or via their regulator in the case of fuel and temp gauge. There is also a white/red wire from ignition switch which feeds the starter relay, live when ignition switch turned to start position. This maybe the one you mistook for red/white.
