That's what I last used it for TBM, measuring the idle speed of a vintage Lister JP2M diesel in my narrowboat. It mechanically counts the number of revolutions over a preset period of a few seconds then the needle freezes with a read out. Primary use was measuring lathe leadscrew speeds for thread cutting.
