As TBM says, the feed for the indicators goes through the hazard switch. The feed is cut to the indicator circuit when the hazards are on, but the switch failed internally so that the current was permanently off.
I made a temporary fix by removing the hazard switch and wiring across the socket until I could get a replacement.

Well done! Covers all the symptoms and matches the diagram. It is the thingie my diagram is pointing to.
