My understanding is that the yearly exemption renewal procedure was to ensure that the vehicle used on the road was insured, similar to the process with those that are not Tax Exempt that have to prove insurance and MOT

If the Tax Exempt vehicle does not appear on the MIB database, then you are not permitted to renew the Tax Exemption and must SORN.

Regardless, I think it is better to use the same terminology as the DVLA to avoid confusion.
