My immediate thought was that the damper looks old and rusty. I know that the rust is only external but it does make me wonder if they is still in reasonable condition. A set of new dampers does not cost the earth and might improve the ride.

As for the gease I occasionally give that area a good clean before greasing. That way any grease that comes out would be relatively clean and free from road grime and grit. I have often wondered why Morgan did not develop a better shrouded system as in the much acclaimed Lancia Aurelia system.
