Dave, I would check your insurance coverage carefully, as it is not unknown for those with UK fully comp insurance to expect that the same level of cover follows them when driving in France or elsewhere, but it is possible that the cover may be reduced while driving abroad to the minimum legally acceptable coverage in whichever country one is visiting... In the UK min cover was RTA which as best I can remember, was a fig leaf at best.. Worth checking..?
Absolutely correct George! We have just returned from a 12 day trip to the south of France in the Audi which is insured through Audi insurance. We had to pay £46.00 to get the same level of comprehensive cover we have in the UK.
Don, many thanks for confirming my thinking on the drop in the level of cover provided by some insurers when driving abroad and which it seems possible some may not have read the details of their cover.
I have been with the same Morgan specialist insurer for over 20 years, and as the result of your response Don, I dug out my recently renewed policy which states as follows :-
We will provide the minimum insurance needed by the relevant law to allow you to use your vehicle in the European Union, Andorra, Iceland, Norway, Serbia or Switzerland (including Lichtenstein).
Whether one`s agreed value might apply or not... perhaps best to check with one`s insurer before you travel...?
Peter in the three rather lengthy Southern European trips we made, when in France for the 24 hrs, I shredded a fan belt while in company with a Porsche 930, who thought to show my Morgan a clean pair of heals,,,(-: Fortunately I spotted the condition of the belt in my usual morning checks on the following day, of course everyone carrys a spare fan belt and the tools to change it when touring...? The next issue was my fault for not replacing the pre formed rubber elbows which I suspect were at the time perhaps 15 years old, and while cruising in Spain the old thing began to misfire and I spotted a dribble of fuel being blown out through the louvres on top of the bonnet, fortunately heading downhill at the time at the bottom of which was a large viewing/parking space, looking out on to the the Atlantic, of course everyone carries a couple of feet of rubber tube under the drivers seat that can be cut to size and squeezed into position to make a temporary repair.... which lasted over a thousand miles or so until I could attain the replacement parts....But then when Kevin the chap who restored what then came to be my Morgan he did so as a tourer equipped with a list of spares the majority of which I have had the good fortune not to require other than the two mentioned while touring...
