Just a little bit more to add to this that might help anyone with this problem Yes relieving the indicated area buy a small amount on the self adjusting spacer bar is absolutely correct and allows the shoes to sit clear of the drums if they are fouling. often not noticed when checking after a service but use the brakes once in anger and the expansion created by heat to the lining material and the drums can create a contact issue and thus heat and premature wear.
Now another little known issue is that pre 93 cars had a different handbrake system and were designed to have a handbrake ratchet setting of 4 clicks, The adjustment to accommodate wear was a purely manual function by way of a star wheel. Post this and into the caparo set up it was a setting of 7 clicks at the handbrake. If the Caparo is set with too little throw it prevents the now automatic brake adjuster from working correctly. Yet still dealers and others are setting the handbrake lever too tight. Go check your cars and I am sure many of you will find this to be the case!
NB. some later cars might be causing problems to interior trim if set correctly as the quadrant hasn't changed much throughout production but a setting of 6 clicks at the handbrake usually sorts this out and doesn't seem to effect auto adjustment.
