Most of Northern Italy has just announced that Euro 5 diesels will not be able to used in cities with more than 30 thousand inhabitants from October until April. The reason given is pollution but it is seen as a political push to force users into BEV. The fact is that all Euro 5 diesels have particle filters and produce less CO2 than petrol cars. What is lacking in Euro 5 cars is the system to cope with NOx emmisions. It has been discovered that some direct injection petrol cars produce more fine particles than a diesel with a filter and all the other sourses of fine carbon particles are the same, even for BEVs, that is to say tyres and brakes mainly.
Apparently production of ICE vehicles must stop in Europe by 2035 except for those using synthetic fuel!! I suspect that by and larger this is to cater for relatively low production enthusiast vehicles; Porsche, Ferrari, Morgan, etc.
I can't help but wonder how much of this is driven by the "green" lobby aided by manufacturers who want to force people to buy new cars.
Hopefully we will get until 2035 to use the new diesel Polo Euro 6d-ISC-FCM (AQ), whatever that may mean. By then, if I am lucky, I will be pushing towards my 89th birthday and will probably trade it in on a BEV mobility scooter.
