I'm running it on 97 and have (sorry to put it this way) wrung its little neck out quite regularly (once properly warm of course!).
No need to be sorry, this is what they are for! The behaviour you describe is definitely atypical for GDI motors so I'd definitely look for fault codes, they don't always lead to the MIL being switched on.
