Direct injection is not the be all and end all with petrol engines although it's been the norm for diesel engines since their inception for hopefully obvious reasons. Downside is that petrol doesn't have the opportunity to wash valve stems leading over time to carbon build up.
Interesting that Ford engineers considered direct injection when designing the Cyclone V6 engine in my car, but dropped in favour of port injection.
