Nice to get a personal perspective John, well written and leaving the rest of us waiting for more. Just a thought, with your pictures being slow to upload, were they taken with a high resolution, high Megapixel count and the whole file is just to big to download? [As you can see I know very little about this sort of thing, but have had similar problems in the past.]
