Interesting and very important part of your engine. The conventional throttle body controlling inlet air is replaced by a system varying inlet valve openings for each cylinder, controlled by a valvetronic motor operating an eccentric shaft to cover all cylinders as below.

Does seem mechanically complex never mind the electronics. Being BMW probably very reliable though, so somewhat surprising you have had two motors fail.
