Data from the Association of British Insurers highlights that injury claims represent a shrinking share of motor insurance payouts. Of the record £11.9 billion paid out in claims, the vast majority goes toward vehicle damage (63% or £7.5 billion), with personal injury taking a smaller proportion.
The volume of motor-related injury claims has fallen drastically in recent years, dropping from 667,000 in 2018 to just 328,637 in recent data. This decline is primarily driven by legal reforms—such as the Official Injury Claim portal—which capped minor whiplash payouts. Conversely, soaring inflation in vehicle parts and garage labor has caused vehicle damage costs to dominate total claims payouts.
