The wide body means an overall increase in passenger compartment width of 4". Now all Plus and Roadster models are wide body where as in 1993 it was an option

No, not really.
The term "widebody" would more accurately be called a "wide wing". There is no extra width in the cabin, only in the wings
(an extra 110mm).
In short, it is simply an aesthetic choice. The Company has been making all models wider for the last few years.
