Are you sure that's it's actually overheating? A broken or badly earthed voltage regulator on the instruments can display exactly the same symptoms. this sounds interesting the wiring into the dashboard is a bit of a mess

Mine was too - spent sometime time tidying mine - makes it much easier to understands....diagram here for a 1973....

I should really continue with mine. I did renew wiring to drive lamps / horns, fitting relays, but stopped there. Loops of too thin wire with no protection didn't seem a good idea!
