Lucy & I are starting to plan a wee trip for next year, early September, probably, Venice and back(stop laughing at the back!) We're planning to get the motorail from Holland to Livorno, maybe a day or 2 cruising around Italy, then a week in Venice, and a gentle tootle back around the french coast. Bearing in mind that the start/ end point is Inverness, anyone got any travel tips or advice? Particularly, can anyone advise on secure parking when we get to Venice? I'm sure lot's of TM'ers have tried...

Strangely enough I was there yesterday. We got a hotel in Mestre with secure parking and took a ten minute train ride into Venice for just over 2 euros return.

When you're in Italy a lot of the petrol stations are self service and don't take credit cards. You need to pay cash which makes it tricky to top the car right up.

Thanks for the tip, but there's a certain hotel on the Grand Canal where we have to be on Sept 1...

Ok, there seems to be in entire industry devoted to parking in Mestre. The word is that the Venice car parks cost an arm and a leg. The other alternative would be to ferry the car to the Lido and park there. Get Googling!

In my opinion, arriving by train is the best way to arrive in Venice. Stepping out of the station is pure magic.

Bud

Nah. across the lagoon from the airport in a private vaporetto, through the backwaters onto the GC...THAT'S the finest way to arrive for your first time!
