Actually they won't make a difference at parking speeds which I suspect may be the OPs main problem.

I have to do a lot of low speed manoeuvring on my +8 and it is hard work, I can manage it at the moment, but if in some time in the future it gives me problems than I would certainly consider one of the programmable electric ones and have it set up to give no assistance above (say) 15mph

I run a 2008 Plus 4. By then the factory fitted roller bearings. I previously had a 1992 Plus 4. In the current car the steering is light as long as you have the car moving even very slightly. Try to turn the wheel with the car stationary and yes you have to pull hard. The previous car was heavier, but still not too bad as long as the damper blades were well greased and, once again, you keep the car moving. BTW it also helps to have the tyres pumped up :-)

After 22 years I fitted hydraulic power steering and it transformed the car - at all speeds.

After 20 years with a 1990 Plus8, I know a bit about the problems. If I can be of help PM/email me.
