Bobajobbob, I faced the same issues when I got my 1995 4/4 back in 2004. I installed two speakers in the rear side panels and used a Sony radio to which I wired the speakers as the "front" speakers and wired the "back" speaker outlet to a 3.5mm socket mounted on the rear bulkhead between and behind the seats. when pottering about I used the speakers, otherwise I used earbud speakers from Starcom which are for a motorbike and just attenuate the road / wind noise - all other sounds are fully audible. Sony produce a wired remote which I mounted on the rear of the transmission tunnel as when the radio is mounted up under the heater you can't get at it!!
Sony's current radios handle the iphone and /or ipod with external mic for phone calls.
I have this set-up also on my current 2009 plus4 and it works very well both for phone on the move(handsfree!!) and as a radio.
Hi Bob, Yes i have...... On a 93 +4. it is mounted landscape just to the left of the steering column using just the cradle and first connection (keyway slot) part of an air vent mount. I fabricated (bent to shape) an aluminium strip that is screwed to the back of the dash and to the cradle keyway. The top of cradle butts up to the underside of the walnut dash. I had to re-position the Rheostat (why do these exist? ... Anybody?) to use this position.
The cradle keyway means the cradle can be removed when not required. I have an iPhone connector that has both a jack plug and a usb charger, the jack plug enables the sat nav instructions (or music) to play via the radio speakers. I have it set up to play just through the r/h speaker so it can be heard above wind and exhaust noise.
I doubt if you will find a ready mount to fit permanently other than the sucker type. Hope this helps, regards john k
Hi Bob, My Knob came from http://www.passionauto.co.uk/categorylist/cars-interior-gear-knobs/ £9.95 Rover knob just screws (twists) off and the Alloy one uses a plastic sleeve and allen screws. It shortens the height of the shaft and makes the gear change feel nicer. Gets warm on long runs, nice in the winter, regards john k
I use RAM mounts for mounting gps, iphone, ipad, etc. in my cars.
Here are some pictures of the setup in my car. It's a ball mount that attaches on the tube under the dash in the footwell, and an arm with any holder you wish at the end of it. Iphone holder in the pictures.
Advantages are no interference between passenger foot/knee and holder, no interference with gear shift. Can be placed beneath dash, just outside, or in front of dash with additional arm and ball joint, as well as into the sitting area if you want the holder closer to you or your passenger. Infinitely adjustable due to the ball-joint system, no "click stops" yet firm and tight grip due to slight rubber coating on ball joints to stop any motion or "creep".
I use one of the thicker arms to take the weight of my ipad with holder, to use for the TomTom app on a nice big screen.
No separate usb socket, it's just a small 12v cigarette charger in the original under the dash socket. Compatible with most USB devices. Amazon sells them, (as well as any electronics store I presume...)
I ordered my bits and pieces as separates via the "Products/RAM Components" menu item. These are the product links, however I guess a lighter type "B" components could be used for holding an iPhone... although I don't know.
Great USB plug ordered. Still looking at the mounts. JBK do you remember what your knob is called? There are quite a few similar solid aluminium knobs on the site you listed. Thanks.
