I put leather gaitors on my Series One Land Rover front axle 20 years ago to protect the chrome swivel housings. Before fitting it was recommended to impregnate the leather with vasaline. They are still in good (but grubby) condition to this day.

They would have to be wraparound and secured by velcro or cable tie or similar, because it's almost impossible to slide one over the spring due to how the kingpin & stub are assembled. Something similar to the old A series by-pass hose but bigger would work, but wraparound rubber won't seal very well unless it's superglued.
I still think that mohair is one of the best fixes, because it's cheap, simple to make and lasts well.

Dave, is Mrs W up to another batch of mohair gaiters? If so please put me down for a pair. The obvious advantage is they wrap around so can be fitted (and removed for cleaning) without dismantling the suspension.
If she goes into full time production, Dave, would you put my name on the list too? As a daily car, I shall be doing 10k miles pa, in all weathers. [Is that too much like begging ]
