Hi All,
Thanks so much for all the help so far, I am slowly getting somewhere. So far:
- lots of discussions with Andrew (brownbaker) and am going to see his car tomorrow.
- have spoken to the owner of the one in West Wales, it is a lovely car, very well kept and in good condition. Someone will snap it up, but it isn't for me as I prefer a single colour scheme, and I am after a crossflow car really, not a CVH.
- have spoken to the owner of the red one, it was fully restored with body and chassis separated by a previous owner, and it looks to have been a thorough job. He also modified the interior to make it look older, hence the varnished dashboard of his own design (I am in 2 minds about it) and the bench seat. The current owner has continued to make sensible mods, including a better carb, telescopic dampers and an electric fuel pump. He currently owns a new Supersports, and a new 3 wheeler, so perhaps unsurprisingly the poor old crossflow isn't geting used much (well, would you ever come to a point where you would go into the garage and say 'No, I won't take the Supersports, or the 3 wheeler, today I will go in the 4/4...'). I also have my doubts about the colour, it may however be as close to the ideal as I will get. Unfortunately he is a long way away and I would not contemplate buying before driving it. Presumably the bench seat is non adjustable, so I might not fit in any case.
- I also spoke to Roger Harper about the black 1600 CVH he has, as I was getting desperate! Again, I could not bring myself to buy without driving it, and it was sold within a couple of days!
So, hopefully I am making progress - am definitely going forward, just don't know yet whether I am describing a very wide circle!!
Mark

Technically, no, bench seats were replaced by individual seats in 1975. Something to do with changing legislation?
However, I have a 1976, which has a bench seat... Car was built in '76, so it's either a 'we have these parts left' issue, or was ordered like that - not stated on the build record...

Interesting - ours are days appart and mine does not have the bench seats. It was legislation - I think I read that in John Worrels book...

Yours is a 4 seater though - they had individual seats pre-75, for rear seat access Why mine has a bench is a mystery. I've grown to really like it though, but miss the head restraints...

Thanks all for your advice and help - so glad I posted originally as it has been enormously useful.
