Bad news, chaps. A new fungus which kills ash trees, has reached the UK Apparently, it does to ash trees what dutch elm disease did to, well, elms. I hear it's killed 90% of the ash trees in Denmark in 7 years. Could the ash frame go the same way as the elm chair seat?

That's disturbing...

In Australia (WA especially) quarantine regulations are very strict. I thought over the top until I moved here. Then you learn parts of Aus have diseases that others (mostly WA) do not and that they want to keep it that way.

When we moved here they went through our posessions very careully - they found some sprayed pine cones (part of our Christmas decorations) - they had to be "cleaned" (for a fee).

Perhaps the UK being an island needs to take a similar stance (as with Rabies)?

Do I remember correctly that Morgan imports most of its wood from Belgium? In that case an import ban could be a problem.

It is now classed as a quarantine pest so movement is controlled, but apparently it's already been found as far north as Glasgow, although so far it's only been found in planted trees, not the wild stock.
Trouble is, I believe the ash used by the factory is all imported.

According to the factory most of the timber is sourced from Norfolk. It would be a disaster for ash trees to be killed off after all the elms.

As far as import bans are concerned, by the time the government endlessly talked about the human rights of overseas growers etc, the disease could well end here.

I seem to have vague memory that in the distant past, MMC used ash from Belgium and regulalrly used to find bits of shrapnel, barbed wire etc in it.
Anyone confirm this?

Yes spot on G it's in the Gregory Huston Bowden "First & Last" book.

I'm pretty sure that I have read recently somewhere that the ash is now UK sourced, so not good news at all.

Thanks- senior moment there! I should have known 'cos I've got the book! ( Birthday present in 1972 and then got the second edition in the eighties!!) In fact ( and purely because wet sundays in Wales aren't the most exciting when you're Hopalong Cassidy- I did a bit of OCD- ing and found it in there. I still can't belive that he went for the scheme on tha PLus 8 if his. The Yellow- at a push ( and becuase I lknow mr Lomax has a huge soft spot for yellow cars- but the upholstery-??

Here in Michigan we have a pest known as the emerald ash borers, that have led to a failing campaign to try and keep them at bay. As of now there are 2 almost dead ash trees right outside my office window. These bugs have had a similarly deadly result for a high percentage of our ash trees state wide.
