Hit 500 miles today in the new Roadster, so thought I'd try and grease the front suspension.

I had to take the wheels off - the near side nipple is facing in towards the car, so it's impossible for anyone other than a contortionist to reach.

I couldn't really tell if the grease was going in and didn't see any seeping out. I may need to have another go at it.

However it gave me the chance to clean the inside of the wheels.

How often should one grease, at what mileage intervals?

Well I'm told 500 or 1,000 depending on how much mechanical sympathy you have.

I found on my roadster that the nipples would revolve in their seats and from time to time would be facing inwards but could be turned to get the grease gun on them. The other point of not seeing the grease emerge somewhere, I found on occasions that dirt would block the nipple and grease would go from the gun sideways, when all was clear it would emerge between the spring coils of the shocks.

You can always undo the grease nipple, put a washer underneath and retighten. This should change which way it faces.

When it's off you can also see if the ball on the head of the nipple is free by pushing it down slightly with a metal point.

I do mine about every 500 miles as its quick and easy to do. Remember if driving in wet etc conditions this can wash the grease away so will need doing more often.

It helps to be a contortionist. Ask to have the grease nipples re aligned at first service. How did you get on with the wheel nut wrench?

Wheel nut wrench is perfect! so much easier.

Taking the front wheels off is not that tricky, but knowing I've greased correctly seems, at the moment, a dark art.

Greasing mine every 500 (so 3 times in 6 weeks !). Yes, have found that I need to be contortionist, never realised the nipples could revolve (oo-er ).

Now wearing a pair of Dave W's lovely gaiters, so that should help protect from the current, daily, Mendips' downpours.

According to my handbook the front suspension needs greasing only every 5,000 miles! I do mine more frequently than that and I use moly grease (the sort of thing used for CV joints). The car has done well over 30,000 miles and the original 'plastic' bushes are still good, with no play in the assembly.
