No you don't. Take a look at a retailer that lets you choose e.g. Novatech and see how much difference adding Windows makes.

No, it's £90 ( for the basic Windows home, other versions cost more). Select "No operating system installed" & compare the price. The difference is the cost of Windows. Also, with Linux, you don't pay for any extras like Office. The amount of software available is astonishing ( although so is a bit rough!). Ian

It's free! are you suggesting it is viable if your resurrecting an old Computer! That too. As operating systems get more bloated, the computer needs to be more powerful to run them. Amongst the range of Linux distributions are a number designed to run on older, less powerful, machines. So you don't need to throw away your computer when Microsoft produce another version. Ian

My only criticism is that it is a little slow to load on older systems but on the newer faster systems it is ok. I also use Thunderbird and Firefox. I would not describe any of those as rough. I like open source software and freeware so much I have even been know to make a small donation to the author(s)

Good man Have you tried LibreOffice? It's a fork from OpenOffice which most Linux distributions now use by default. Ian
