No you don't. Take a look at a retailer that lets you choose e.g. Novatech and see how much difference adding Windows makes.

No, it's £90 ( for the basic Windows home, other versions cost more). Select "No operating system installed" & compare the price. The difference is the cost of Windows.
Also, with Linux, you don't pay for any extras like Office. The amount of software available is astonishing ( although so is a bit rough!).

That too. As operating systems get more bloated, the computer needs to be more powerful to run them. Amongst the range of Linux distributions are a number designed to run on older, less powerful, machines. So you don't need to throw away your computer when Microsoft produce another version.

I have been using Open Office for years and I am more than happy with it. My only criticism is that it is a little slow to load on older systems but on the newer faster systems it is ok. I also use Thunderbird and Firefox. I would not describe any of those as rough.

I like open source software and freeware so much I have even been know to make a small donation to the author(s)

Have you tried LibreOffice? It's a fork from OpenOffice which most Linux distributions now use by default.
