I was in halfords earlier today, and noticed that they had snowsocks on display. So this eveneing have been reading up about them as it occurred to me it might be smart to keep a pair in the boot over the winter.

Whilst browsing I found michelins new composite snowchains, made of of aramid.

I wondered if any of our posters (esp the mainland europe based ones) have had any experience with these, they are a little more expensive than the socks, but look more user friendly than traditional chains.

Any thoughts?

Unless your going to drive up steep mountain roads that are covered in ice or not been ploughed then i wouldnt buy snow chains. Living in norway we shift to wintur tyres every november and back in april. These are more than good enough for day to day driving on normal roads and motorways and even mountain tracks as long as they have been ploughed.

I cant imagine diving a morgan anywhere that would require snowchains. That kind of equipment is usually reserved for massive trucks or off roader 4x4s at least here.

Unfortunately winter came early this year so ive had to pack my morgan into a carcoon in the garadge until april. Makes me want to cry seeing my third child bubble wrapped for 5 months.

Oh, I should have explained better.

I was thinking about my new rwd daily (1989 merc 190e). I don't intend to use the morgan in snow - although I have in the past and it has good traction, with its narrow tyres and seats over the driving wheels - mind you the merc tyres are only 195's so maybe a couple of bags of sand in the boot would do the trick.

I live in Northumberland (which can attract bad weather in the winter) - and drive about quite a bit, I would buy some winter tyres, but a set would cost more than the car cost me. So it occurred to me that socks or possibly these aramid "chains" might give me a bit of extra grip if it snows.

I bought snowsocks last year as a safety as my C220 Merc estate is s***t in the snow with it's 245 tyres.

This year I spent £900 for snow tyres with alloys. I have winter tyres when I lived in Bavaria & they make a big difference

Well, I got out voted, the kids hadn't been out in the new shed yet so we went out in the merc today. Safely back home now to watch the rugby on the telly.

Have a look at these - http://www.exeros-technologies.com/mita-snow-chains

I have not tried them but they look very interesting and are universal. Change the car but keep the snow chains.
