Interesting. Totally agree about celebrating past and people, also think it is an opportunity that could be used to the max commercially, hence musings on how all the different elements are combined. No real view on the aesthetics, apart from a slight remembrance of ‘Ogri’ in Bike mag. Will watch with great interest to see how it all plays out in the media in a couple of years time. Of course, in countries such as Japan that read from right to left, the banner could result in tentative orders for the 'new' three wheelers!

Or me! One is afraid to make any comment here any more, without somebody getting upset about the contents of ones Posting. Like Lorne I have been circumspect in my 'Postings' of late; since the start of the 'Logo' discussion, as I'm all too aware what can happen to a perfectly good Discussion Group when this internecine dialogue takes hold; to the extent that I even requested a 'Posting' to be withdrawn because it 'upset' a fellow Forum member.
If we cann't air our personal views certain subjects, either seriouly or 'tongue in cheek' than what is the purpose of remaining a contributor ?

Probably a matter of different viewpoints, but for me, a logo is rather like a ‘standard’ (as in flag) – something which acts as a symbol to represent a whole series of different things, be they emotions, perceptions or whatever. For this reason, changes should happen as often, and with as much consideration as to, say, a regimental badge. Logos accrue validity through duration and exposure until they reach the point that just sticking a picture on an object can significantly increases the perceived value.. Good ones become iconic. Paul, You make these and your other comments solidly. In truth, outside of tiny tweaks to make a logo work with newer media forms, there is never a good reason for a healthy business and reputation to change one. That is the very first law of marketing and the reason one creates a logo in the first place. One wishes one's glories, past, present and future to be crystallized in a single company symbol recognized by all in an instant. That has a super-powerful effect, as poignant as a flag or bagpipes in battle. On the practical side, one incurs enormous costs in changing on every sign and ad you have planet wide and doing so at the risk of alienating at least part of your existing market without a trace of a profit motive to make it worthwhile. HOWEVER, perhaps Roderich's prediction and opinion is the correct one, to whit; that the REAL Morgan icon is the enduring Morgan car shape rather than the old wings logo. Paul, However, to my mind, the Centenary is a celebration of all things Morgan, so: 100-years of the cars, people and company. It is a stand-alone event – a one off. Therefore, I like the route they have followed I agree with Simon on this. The Centenary is one-off event for all. It is not something representing the Company and its products but rather all elements of the whole community and a 100th birthday of them. It is appropriate that a different symbol underline that. It is very retro, cute and tells a tale. It proposes to represent nothing more than the 2009 event. Lorne

I would agree with this wholeheartedly. The only subject I have ever asked people to be considerate over is the 'old' 'Trad vs Aero 8' debate. By 'considerate' what I mean is: while I'm happy for people to discuss the pros and cons of each model, I just grew VERY tired of people drawing lines in the sand and slagging the Aero 8 off. This comment isn't directed at one person but imho, is something that all people with immovable views on the Aero 8 can be guilty of. Healthy debate – fine! Constantly using the Aero 8 as an automotive punching bag because of age old stereotypes and biases – not acceptable! And, with this said, the same would be said if I felt someone was constantly bashing any Morgan (I realise Porsche 911s are fair game!) Nevertheless, I am pleased to say that this has been respected by all and therefore, I have had no reason for complaint since. As I said when I started the site – to me a Morgan is a Morgan is a Morgan. I don’t see one car as better or worse, only different and chosen at different times for different reasons. Therefore, as far as I am concerned, as long as comments are not slanderous, or arguments become personal, I have no reason to stop healthy debate. Robert, as you said, without that what is left of a discussion group?

the REAL Morgan icon is the enduring Morgan car shape rather than the old wings logo. Hi Lorne Quite agree that the car shape is very distinctive, and even an icon in itself. Would also agree that the different Morgan logos and typefaces do not have the same impact with the general public as any of the large manufacturers, but how much of that is due to the variety and changes? The Ford logo has not changed that much since 1928, BMW have never altered theirs. As to 2009 being a celebration of the past and the people, yes I’ve already agreed with that – but surely those involved will enjoy the events themselves, regardless of whatever logo is used, especially if as Rod says “Most people are interested in the cars and not in any logo”. My contention is still that as well as our own ‘internal’ celebrations, there will hopefully be a lot of media exposure to the general public, of whom “many will not know the company has been around for 100-years” (Simon). It would appear that we agree on the impact of a logo, I just feel that continuity is important – especially for an occasion that will reach a wider audience. However, if the anniversary will remain more of a ‘private’ event, without any outside coverage I would fully agree with you. If not, not!

Being away from Morgans for nearly 30 years , but having kept in touch with the marque I'm bemused by the Trad v Aero trench warefare. I love em both and not being able to find an Aero 8 in a colour that I liked , got the 'must have it' for the Roadster I bought in red with SS wires (plus a load of other goodies. That said I still like the Aero and funds permitting may well order a new one when the 4.8 appears. Both are iconic, and unmistakeably 'Morgan'. The fact that the Aero has (please forgive me) proper windows (and electric to boot ), a decent hood (on later models ) and the piece de resistance POWER STEERING I think its fantastic that Morgan are still making cars at all and so different from virtually anything else is something to be marvelled at not slagged off, then I'm new to the fraternity so have not ben turned one way or the other PS Sidepipes rule

Robert, as you said, without that what is left of a discussion group? No complaints from me re this exchange - we have expressed, debated and defended our viewpoints politely without any pig-tail pulling – a certain level of robustness is to be expected where passions run high, but that can be quite invigorating.
