Hi,
I have a 1993 Plus 8. The fuel filler is a flush locking door type (flush with the rear panel and body colored). How could I convert to a traditional exposed fuel filler cap?
Thanks

They will all fit, but I will have to make a mounting plate to go in the oblong space where the petrol filler door is now. I was hoping someone made such a thing out of billet. Alternatively I could fit a new rear panel, but didn't want to do that, 'cos it would mean a paint job as well.

My '93 +8 is the same. I've often wondered how to do what you are suggesting. Short of re-panelling the whole back panel, the only sensible way I thought of was to make a smart looking stainless panel with a round hole in it for the new filler cap, that covers the oblong aperture. You would have to fix it with nice looking screws or rivets and probably edge it with some plastic trim or small beading. It needs to look as it was always meant to be there, which might be tricky, which is one reason I have never got round to doing it.

Yes, that's what I'm thinking of doing. As my back panel is aluminium I was planning to use a thin piece of billet which would be easy to work with to radius the edges and cut the hole for the filler cap, then maybe paint it to same colour as the car. There are plenty of authentic looking flip-up filler caps in polished aluminium and I can put in a new extended filler pipe. It should be quite simple except for shaping the plate in which the fuel filler cap will be bolted. When I do it I will post pics, but probably won't have time until the end of January. If you don't feel skilled enough to shape the piece of stainless, you could ask a machine shop to do it for you.

What makes fitting a panel difficult is the fact that the filler hole is not central in the recess ( at least on my car - 93 +4). So the cap would be offset and could look like a bodge. anyone actually done this mod?
I too would prefer an exterior cap as the recessed area has filled with water when the drain hole blocked up, had to drill another larger hole to cure this. I was told by a dealer the flush locking panels were to comply with an new (at the time) regulation ( i think EU) that turned out not to apply after all, so MMC reverted to the nicer exterior caps later, or something along those lines.

You could make the small panel (that will accommodate the new exposed filler cap)a little larger, to ensure the traditional filler cap is central.

You could remove the recessed bit that the current filler cap sits on, or enlarge the hole in it, which would allow you to centralise the filler cap and the new, longer, hose you would need.
I believe the flap came about due to emission regulations, which forbade vented caps. At that time flip-top caps were not suited to this, and MMC had to use a commercially available cap that was so ugly it had to be hidden behind a flap.

Yes, either way, it's definitely do'able, just need to make sure it looks tidy.
