In NSW where the DMT issues the plates I discovered that I had been riding a motorcycle for one year that was unregistered and uninsured. The DMT (DVLA equivalent) had handed over the wrong plate, one number more or less, with the papers. When the person who had my plate returned to have the error corrected they gave him a new plate and simply cancelled my registration. Took an hour of "discussion" to get the problem rectified. I had never noticed the plate number was different to that on the documents.

My 1976 4/4 became a 1969 model with the last 4 digits of the engine number being used as the chassis number when it moved from WA to NSW. Took some fixing when I brought it back to WA.

It wasn't a BMW by any chance?...I've had just the same thing!
Mind you MMC aren't much better. My car had factory plates on it when I bought it, that they wanted to retain. They told me they'd look after all the paperwork...the only problem was that after the transfer the paperwork with my new reg sat in one of their in trays for weeks and i was running the car around illegally! Yes, I'm afraid it was a BMW Jays... Hey Ho!
Philip.
