Never really understood why the Tenax fasteners are used on Easyup hoods yet ordinary pop fasteners are ok for traditional hoods. At least the latter don't shear if you forget to undo them.

You can get them out, but it's a slow process. Don't use an electric drill. If that slips you're in trouble. I sheared the drivers side after a few months. I used a pin chuck (modellers hand driven miniature drill worked by finger & thumb), and over a few evenings drilled down the centre with a very fine drill. Eventually I hit sawdust so I know I'd got the full length. Then I used a triangular mini modellers file, "tapped" into the hole. It unscrewed easily from that. What a relief. A braver man than I could use a Dremel much quicker, but as I said, if it slips it will make things a lot worse. I have a variable speed Dremel, not sure I've got a bit thin enough - but I might have. It might be worth a go as I'd prefer to have the original fitting...

Neil, if I've understood your post correctly and you have 2mm of the thread still showing, could you try using the Dremel with a fine cutting disc to cut a slot in the top of it, then unscrew it with a small screw driver? May be less risky than the Dremel drill bit running off the screw head into the alloy panel? If you try this, I suggest it would be worth putting masking tape around the area to protect the paint work before starting. MZ.

Hi I did the same to my roadster I found if the stud is sheared off flush you can get a new fastner with 2 screw holes as below Good Luck http://www.woolies-trim.co.uk  Gajet, Woolies looks like a blooming excellent resource, thanks for posting. I switched the Rear Press Stud on the car provided for the Tonneu to one of these Tenex Studs. The thread on the Tenex Stud is larger and longer and I soon discovered that the density of the Ash Frame is so high that there was no way that I could just screw it into the existing screw hole. I had to make the hole the correct size for the thread.  I only say this to warn that it is likely to be no easy jub to get the broken stub out. DaveW's method sounds excellent as usual.

But as they are hardened they are very brittle and easily snap. Drilling them out is not easy

It's only half come out (I think). It looked sheared off - dragged off.
I left the garage in a small rage so didn't look too closely.
I also bent the spanner, the long spanner, trying to get the front wheel off. And scratched the chrome wheel nut.
It's not been a great afternoon in the garage!
Sounds like one of those days where you'd have been best off just going back to bed.

Pandy, you're right. I bent the spanner trying to get the wheel off, so I had to use the Morgan one (+ hammer) - so I tore the stud out going for the hammer. Perfect.
MZ, it's 2mm left on the bit that came out - so the screw remaining in the body is 2mm in to where it sheared. Otherwise I would definitely have used your method.
Maybe BHM can fix - I haven't asked them yet.

Those studs are not in tight. MIne came out easily once drilled, but it took patience and until it was done I had that sick feeling in the pit of my stomach.
