He ended up looking like a sulky spoilt brat in the Mille Miglia although I'm not sure that was down to his competitive nature as a driver, more that he wasn't being recognised as a top celebrity....most of that lot probably would have no idea of who he was. A shame as I'd always quite liked him as a TV chef.......it rather put me off him. I did warm a bit more to him with Jackie Stewart and he drove the race car pretty well.

I have just read the Wikipedia entry on Jackie Stewart. Very interesting.

I do understand the frustrations brought about by a lack of academic achievement when someone is clearly intelligent and has to 'prove themselves' in other ways. This can have quite an effect on one's 'character'.
Academic children are/were often considered to be hard working diligent types whilst the 'less able' were often 'compensated' by having some 'innate practical ability'. I think Jackie Stewart is one of those people who demonstrates a very intelligent and diligent approach to his craft and rightly challenges this prejudiced leaning towards academia as the 'be all and end all'. Sorry rant over,I'm retired but still a pedant!

Well I've just caught up with viewing these this afternoon gloomy here again so no chance of another run out.

Interesting that both Moss and Stewart have a very smooth driving style. I remember seeing Stewart doing a demonstration drive round Brands Hatch on the TV in a 2.8 V6 Ford Capri. Typically relaxed demeanour with finger tips on the wheel with apparently little effort from inside the car, but externally the suspension was fully loaded and the tyres were squeeling right through the corners... very impressive. Also, we saw the Stewart F1 Tyrell close up in the pits during a practice session at Le Mans in 2003 at a Classic F1 meeting, and the Stewart F1 Matra Ford at Angouleme in 2011. Both great to see close up.

You can catch a repeat of the Stirling Moss programme this Sunday at 21:00 on the BBC HD Channel.

The following Sunday (21-Jan) the Colin McRae episode is scheduled on BBC 2 and BBC HD.

Dont agree about the racing - it can hardly be closer than it now is and at least we dont get regular deaths. But I do agree about the drivers. Maybe the gentlemanly honesty of the Moss / Hawthorn episode seems a bit old fashioned to some but its much nicer than the win at any cost, cheat as much as you can get away with approach of today.

Actually ( and I dont want to sound racist here) I'm not so sure that the cheating came in with the modern driver so much as the foreign one. For example as with the French on the Monte Carlo rally. Not that we have resisted the trend as shown by MacLaren and Hamilton.

Gad but you cant trust Johhny Foreigner can you? oldgit
