Appears my starter may have failed, the switch is functioning, battery charged, fuse intact.

I just get the clicking of the solenoid when the starter button is pressed. I'm quite handy mechanically so happy to tackle the job, has anyone removed the starter?

Looks like offside wing off. After that it looks tricky! Does it come out above or below? Special tools? Exhaust manifold off?

Just a quick thought, have you checked the battery first?

As said above... check the battery first... it will seem to be working gauges light etc.. but will not turn engine over. Check amp output using multimeeter - needs to be high to turn engine over successfully.

In terms of starter, engine out or bottom tray off.... both are specialist jobs and not recommended to do at home.

As well as checking the battery, have you checked the red positive terminal connection on the bulkhead below the battery, seems it is prone to slight corrosion and then gives same symptoms as amps will not get to the starter motor. You will need to lift the washer bottle out of the way to get at the terminal. 5 minute job to clean connection.

About a week ago I had the same problem, battery appeared in good order, but no start just clicking. This was the first time I have had this problem. I used a portable booster pack and it started first time.
I had assumed it was the battery, but now I note from "GMC N's" post, it may be the terminal. I am assuming by using the booster pack, I bypassed the normal connections by using the positive terminal at the front of the engine and the chassis for negative.
I have enquired with RTCC about fitting a new starter motor, if needed it is a big and difficult job, 6 hours labour. Further, having discussed it with Gajet, he has just had a new uprated starter fitted, this is a big job.

There is an alternative approach to this job which is considerably quicker and reduces the scale of the job itself. It is now our default approach having been successfully doing this common S1 fix for people for the last 9 years.

I had the battery(odyssey PC925)professionally tested earlier and the meter declared it duff. I have it on charge anyway just to see if it will accept enough charge to at least start the car, in the meantime does anyone know if there is any reason why I cannot fit a good quality Bosch S5 battery?

I am onto my 3rd battery in 6 years of ownership with the S1. As you say, there must be a better (and cheaper?) alternative.

For long battery life it is really important to keep the battery charged. If the car is not being used at least once a week it is best to connect a trickle charger.

I suspect the PC925 is only just man enough for the job. Many BMW V8s fit the larger PC1200 battery.

I am also on my third battery after 6 years, despite trickle charging.
