I usually get this a couple of times a year i have great fun by pretending to be real slow and asking really stupid questions. Ask them to wait while you figure something out put the phone down and do something else for a few minutes then come back and ask them to repeat stuff and then put the phone down etc etc. My record is about 40 minutes and one seriously pissed off guy at the other end before they hang up on me.
Not just me then .... great sport eh!! ... can't see how these companies survive really the general public in the UK have become pretty switched on to these scams for some years now surely people falling for them are now in the minority ???
Try this: "Do you have an account with us?" no "Would you like to open an account with us? It will only take a few minutes, and I just need your personal details" no "Well if you don't have an account with us and don't want to open an account, why are you ringing?"

A few years ago I had a run of cold calls from a particular double glazing company, all of which I was resoundingly rude to until I asked one caller if they did conservatories which of course they did and she proceeded to give me all sorts of details of the wonderful conservatories that they offered. After a bit of stringing along I agreed that they should send me some details in the post prior to a visit to assess my requirements. In fairness to the girl on the other end of the line she reacted well to the start of the first line of my address; "Top Flat..." and then said she would take my number off of their list. No more calls from that company. Result.
Before we went T/Preference I used to note down every call from double glazing companies - date and time. After a while I would read back every call over the previous couple of years from that company and suggest that since they had rung me x times on these dates and never got anywhere, why were they persisting? Sometimes being anal can be quite effective.
Everest never give up though.
