There have been quite a few posts recently on this subject and the suggestion that there should be a thread entitled "Cancer"
I was just wondering whether a thread entitled "Life's too Short" would be more encompassing?

In our vitual pub, which we know as the Malvern Arms, I thought that we could consider this to be the warm chair by the fire? The place within the pub where you can have a quiet chat with your best mates?

We know that Boshers is going through the mill at the moment and that NeilM has concerns over test results, so my thought is that this thread could be that fireside chair for anyone who needs to take a seat and have a chat?

Not a bad idea Bud. It seems to me that as we get older, our exposure to people who are having to deal with cancer and other serious conditions increases.
When I was younger I had no real exposure. My granfather died instantly aged 60 when the alarm went off for an early shift on the railway. But I was only seven, so sheltered from the pain.
The sobering thing is that I'm 60 in a month, but haven't had the harsh working life that he had.
MrsW's parents suffered disturbing deaths, her father with emphesema from the steelworks, which resulted in disability at 55 but which lasted 20 years. Meanwhile he had to watch his wife die from throat cancer at 66.
At work there are now significant numbers of staff with cancer. Three women with breast cancer, two men with bowel cancer, and a couple more with cancer for which I don't have the details. Some have teenage children, these are people in late 40's and early 50's. And so it goes on. Over the years we've lost several friends to this, but also seen some amazing survivors.
A man at work in his early 40's suddenly got pins & needles in his arms and legs one friday lunchtime. He went up to casualty at the Hallamshire in Sheffield. He had a brain tumour the size of a grapefruit, which turned out to be non-malignant. We went up to see him the day after his operation expecting the worst, and he was sitting up in bed reading a book. The stapled repair in the side of his head was the size of a cricket ball. They couldn't get it all out due to where it had grown, but five years on he's doing fine. He was always a bit odd, and a vegetarian, but post-op he became a meat eater.
MrsW and I have resolved to enjoy life while we can, including as many holidays as we can muster, because Life really is too short.

All I can say about my visit to Exeter hospital was that the nurse was charming. Not sure about what she wanted to do with this endoscope, but it looked very dodgy to me.

That is some story. . .phew!

Someone once asked me how old I was. At the time (2 years ago) I was 60. He then said "Well, with any luck you should have another 20 healthy years ahead: but you never know, it might just be 20 minutes"
Very sobering, and it ensures that I try hard to enjoy myself and tell the people I love, that I do love them.

Nice topic Budster

It's not the camera that's the problem. It's the sound crew.

I must have met her a few years back, let me just says my eyes were watering when she'd finished.


My mums currently in hospital following a stroke, I was amazed to find a 20 year old on the ward so anything is possible. We should all enjoy it while we can.

Friend of mine had his first heart attack at 30.............
The second one finished him off but he was late 50's by then.

There's a bloke at work who had a stroke in his early 30's and took over a year to recover. Mind you he lives on the edge of a major breakdown most of the time with massive signs of stress.

All this talk of endoscopes makes me think of the late great Robert Schimmel. As stand up comedians go he is a bit blue but I always found him hilarious. Sadly, he was killed in a car crash in 2010.

I was delighted to find this hour long gig of his on you tube (definitely not suitable for those of a sensitive disposition). His thing about endoscopes is in about the 54th minute.
