I first met Colin Gordon at a TVMog Noggin, where he was looking for a center nearer to home. Colin was the only person to ever make friends with me there as we were both on our own among the establishment. Colin had been an active member of the HopMog's TogMog group prior to joining TVMog. When he missed a noggin I emailed him only to find that he had been 'ill'.
He never ever mentioned the illness until I emailed him from my holiday to tell him about an upcoming meeting a couple of days before he actually died. He replied, saying that he was in hospital with Cancer, and that he might not make it.
Sadly we had never exchanged phone numbers, so I never had the chance to chat. I believe that his daughter still drives the Roadster for him.
I've never bothered with Noggins since then and often think how unfair life is.
Golf can be dangerous. I did some interviews at work before Christmas. One candidate lived for golf, but had recently been hit in the eye by a fast moving golf ball. It had split his eyeball and was untreatable. He was in his 30's.
Many year ago, a lady at work was at her grandparents house when there was a loud thump from the bedroom. She went upstairs to investigate. One grandparent was dead on the bedroom floor (can't remember which one). When she came downstairs, the other grandparent was dead in the lounge in a chair. Very spooky but a true story.

Too many times I hear / read / have known people who had great plans for travels and other things once they retired, but they never made it to retirement. Another reason I want to retire early - hopefully the voluntary redundancies continue for another couple of years - I might be able to afford it after 15 years here...
Graham, five years ago (almost to the day) I was in a similar position. I had the opportunity to "express a wish" but in the end I decided to wait just a couple more years. Sadly since then I haven't had another opportunity and I've spent the last three years wondering why on earth I didn't get out when I had the chance. In another 1445 days early retirement for me will become just retirement.
Do your sums carefully and don't miss your chance!
