Err, it will probably cost more than £700k just to fill the poholes in Sheffield's roads... Next year's highway budget for Sheffield is £118 million apparently.

I hate politics as a subject and totally fail to find any motivation in spending time on it. This is enough to make me consider UKIP for one purpose alone. Disgusting.
On the subject of the thread I totally agree.
1. It would cost more than that to fix the holes ! 2. It is wrong that some form of re-investment should not be part of the social contract. We don't want to remove the incentive for good role models but we do need to see fair payback. 3. "its all about ME" culture needs an about turn instruction. We need to be teaching "what can I do as part of society". This needs to be re-branded and launched.
Everyone loves a Morgan. Even me, unless it's broken again.

Notwithstanding any disucssions about rights or wrongs (so to speak) do we believe the rag top "estimates" as to earnings (or sponsorship)? 3.5m seems a lot to me.....tabloid inflation?

Undoubtably some rag top inflation Richard, which is why I deliberately used the term. Jess will earn a lot more over subequent years and with her lovely perdonality will be on tv prrsenting. Just be nice to see some given back.

The same thing crossed my mind. The Council is probably still paying off the debts, having borrowed a shedload so that they could host the World Student Games, which was late eighties, or early ninety's. I remember the stadium being built.
How ironic that the government is funding schools now to encourage sport. I hated sport at school with a vengeance, and that's probably why I have no interest in most of it now.

Just be nice to see some given back. Shocking spelling on this post, due to me rushing before the Underground train took me, er, underground! Should have read.... Jess will earn a lot more over subsequent years and with her lovely personality will (no doubt) be on tv presenting...etc You probably got the drift though! Jeremy

We don't know what she's earning and we don't know what she gives back; so we're not really in a position to criticise her? I also happen to think that she's worked her butt off to get where she is and if she is earning £3.5m and paying 7 figure taxes then that's more than enough recompense. I think Asbo hit the nail on the head above. All IMHO of course

I think Asbo hit the nail on the head above. All IMHO of course And that is the beauty of being able to pull up a comfy chair in front of the virtual fire at the Malvern Arms : we discuss points of view on a subject and do not have to agree on the outcomes of those discussions. Don Valley is closing; Jess Ennis has complained about this. Jess will "earn"/be sponsored to the tune of upto "£3.5m", so would in theory be in a position to be a very large benefactor to Sheffield CC/DVS; the Tax Man will benefit from Jess's large earnings, as long as her "accountant" has not set up JessEnnis plc in the Bahamas (or wherever - I'm not a financial expert, never will be ). What I am saying is that IF you are in a position to help out financially in a cause that truly affects you, surely there is a moral duty to do so and not just moan about it? And this is NOT a personal crusade against Jess whom, as I said in my opening statement "has worked incredibly hard since the age of 10" : if Wayne Rooney were to find Manchester Rovers in difficulty (if not owned by some Americans - don't get me started ) it would be nice to think that he (or any equivalent overpaid-for-what-they-do footballer) would offer the team some financial help from his multi millions. Wont happen of course because the world is not the lovely place I would like it to be ( -9 -land). But at least the Arms allows me to spread my thoughts with a wider audience than just and to receive counter arguments from people whose opinions I respect "Another pint please barman" Cheers Jeremy

Is it me, or do successful people sometimes forget their roots?
The Don Valley stadium is to close because Sheffield City Council needs to save £700,000 in running it; Jess Ennis, who has worked incredibly hard since the age of 10, training at DVS, is now enjoying the financial rewards of her dedication and success. Rag tops report Ms Ennis as being likely to earn £3.5m in sponsorship by summer 2013. Dont worry il get my lads in to Sheffield, they will do the lot £200k (cash only) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=scw_Gmch8D4

Now £3.5m is a LOT of money in a year. Whilst SCC plan to "redevelop" a nearby derelict track (erm, with the £700k they save from DVS???), if I were in Jess's {running} shoes, I would be tempted to say to SCC "here you are boys & girls, £700k to keep Don Valley open UNTIL you have redeveloped the new site". Would leave her with £2.8m (less a bit o' tax) to spend, should get her through next winter I'd have thought?
And they might just name the "new" stadium the Jess Ennis Stadium in gratitude?
Just a thought, but I do despair when £££ clouds rational thinking. I agree that the closure is a crime, and someone must have the dosh to save it. I wonder how much does Ms Ennis already gives to charity, personally I have no idea? But I've seen her face assocaited with a few good causes. She is a patron of Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity, I assume (but do not know) if she donates as well. She is active in the Jaguar Academy of Sport and also supports The Children's Hospital Charity. She's done stuff got Oxfam and Cancer Research as well. Now how much of her sponsership money goes on this, I don't know. But I think, she may already be putting her earnings to good use.... But maybe its the guys who give the sponsership in the first place who should be digging deeper to help out with sport in the uk. And what about all the lottery money that comes in, surely UK sport could fund it. Cameron is bleating on about spending more money on sports in primary schools, at the same time becasue a council has overspent (or was forced to over spend, I wasn't sure WHO actaully had to foot the bill for the student games)they are closing a stadium, a year after the Olymipics ITS MAD!!!!
