Can you put a volt meter on the wiring going to the dimmer or bypass it just to see if that's the problem?

There is a by pass to the power cut off switch behind the drivers seat. That is fused or at least it is on my 97 +4. You need to lift the wooden panel behind the seats to reach it.

It powers from memomery the clock , cigarette lighter & the dash lights.

Gomog also has wiring diagrams.http://www.gomog.com/allmorgan/electricindex.htm
