An update.

Have recently had an e-mail from DVLA and it seems there was a significant majority in favour of the proposed changes to the 3 wheeler licensing ie if you are 21 or over and have passed a car test then you will be licensed to drive a M3W. This will avoid the ridiculous bike test only for new 'riders' as the regs stand since 01 January 2013

I asked if that meant the changes would become law and was told:

'I have no reason to think that the Minister will go against what the people have said they want'

We shall see but I am cautiously optimistic that we are moving back towards the position we all want. Common sense to prevail?

I hope so but it seems apathy on our part led to this position in the first place as we should have been more on the ball and lobbied much more extensively than we did. MMC are you reading this!!

I was guilty of that as simply I did not know what was going on and am sure I was not alone in that.

Any further news from those in the know?

Can't answer the question, but do be aware, this will only applies to drivers in the UK. If a car goes on its holidays to France, say, the post 19 Jan test pass driver is not licensed there - only in England.

I did the survey, said the derogation was right, but the real issue was still not addressed correctly. We must keep pressure up for a fourth European Driving Licence directive to correctly address the car bodied three wheeler issue.

Thanks Martyn. The French connection does not worry me at all ... but may we be able to use a UK licence for short periods in France?

What I feel is more important for those of us with RHD M3Ws in the UK is residual values. If the demand were to falter seriously in years to come ..... ???

Seems this is not so likely now if the amend. is adopted and common sense begins to reign. Not there yet but signs of a step in the right direction?

Thanks for all your efforts on this topic as I am not so sure too many have taken on board the importance of what has been going on ... I was nearly one of them!

A very important an issue this one, much more serious than BS (bum steer or is it bull sh*t!!) etc etc ad nauseum, in my view!

My understanding is the derogation is country specific. In other words, if taken up only applies to UK licences in the UK. The use of another licence, say a German one in the UK, I've no idea what happens!

Whole situation is a mess, and I'd not be surprised if some police forces acted a bit strangely. After all, my licence gives a full group B (car) but is valid for Group A (restricted to tricycles) without saying so. A renewed photocard will/should have it, but ask yourself this, a simple licence check has suddenly become very complicated, will the police get it right, will they even bother?

Take another case, two lads, one passed his car test on 18th January, and the other a week later. First lad can drive my Morgan now (if I let him...) but the second one can't and has to wait until he's 21.

It's a mess.
