I think I'm heading for a geared starter sometime this year...

I had just the same trouble on my Rover-engined 1999 +4.
It turned out to be the starter motor in the end, which was drawing too many amps apparently. I changed it for a 'High Torque' PowerLite unit from Eurolec Components at Brierley Hill near Dudley (at a cost of £130 including the mounting adaptor)and since then it's been no trouble at all and spins over a treat.

Thanks everybody, my inclination was it was an earth problem but having cleaned and re attached the battery & starter earths I was at a bit of a loss.

Graham, your tip to jump the positive straight through to the starter, that leaves everything connected as normal but adds an extra boost straight to the starter motor?

To answer NeilM, once fired up once she starts every time without any hesitation.

Plenty to do this weekend, lets home things warm up a little

Mine is pretty much the same Mike (but sometimes even when warm may be a trifle sluggish to turn over, however always starts).

Positive jump lead direct from the the battery to the starter will power the starter - be prepared! If you get fast turnover by doing that, then there is a problem with the feed to the starter somewhere. If the cranking is slow it points to your starter motor...

Do you have a battery isolator (big red key)? That's where I normally collect my jump lead.

Cheers,

I'll be putting a high geared starter on the 68 crossflow when I rebuild the engine. The existing strter motor is ok (ish) but as others have said better options exist to whizz the engine over.

Ahh, OK.
In that case your starter relay is on the bulkhead on the passenger side? Take the jump lead to that if you don't want to go direct to the starter motor. You'll still be on key start then...
Interesting - there is quite a difference between two 1976 cars!
