Magnesium burns too well for my liking. I seem to recall what might have been an F1 car way back that couldn't be extinguished once it got going.

On a related matter somebody told me (on here?) that when the fire brigade put their car fire out with only underbonnet damage, the insurance wouldn't pay because it was deemed a 'mechanical fault'. The assessor advised the owner that if he'd let it burn out completely, they would have paid for the total loss.

That insurer deserves to go bust if that's the case.

My house insurance paid for a replacement washing machine that went up in smoke (extinguished by the fire brigade).

Cheers,

My insurance said that they would not pay for electrical faults, so when the Roadster caught fire due to an electrical short, they would only pay out on the fire damage. As a result, I didn't get paid for about 2 feet of battery cable exting

A magnesium fire cannot be put out by water or CO2. This combined with the high flame temperature makes such fires very dangerous.

Duilio Agostini had a bike catch fire during a race at Monza in about 1953. A mechanic had forgotten to properly fasten a fuel line and leaking fuel filled the bottom of the faring before it exploded in flames. Duilio escaped with a few nasty burns but the only remaining parts of the bike, apart from the frame, were collected in a bucket. There is a photo somewhere that I was shown. At that time a good part of racing bikes were constructed in magnesium alloy.

The plan is for the EvaGT to have already achieved classic status by the time it is released.

Sadly I learnt from a dealer this weekend Eva is more likely to be born in 2016. But at least she will be on a "flexible" frame/floorpan so both 2 and 4 seat 'Magmogs' could result....
