Just to add to the confusion, my handbook has the capacity as 25 litres at "E" on its page 2.

Well it's all a bit of a mystery ! It'd be interesting to know what's the most anyone has managed to squeeze in.

Hope this is the answer!

Tank full; gauge reads 100%, set trip odo to zero. Drive until gauge reads 0%, read trip odo and you will used half a tank full, say it reads 125 miles so you can reset trip to zero and after 100 miles or so fill up! Seems gauge relates to half a tank only, so my dealer tells me and this way seems to work for me.

My build date was this February so its always possible others work differently. Bizarre ......

Today I was mostly looking at the tank sender, vis a vie inaccuracies there of.
Tank depth 270mm
Sender projection into tank 220mm
It's never going to be any where near is it!
With 125mm of fuel in the tank my display says 0%
To sum up when the gauge hits zero you have half a tank left.
The sender works on a float principal, as the float rises and falls the resistance changes. Unfortunately it's not a lever arrangement that can be bent a bit, but a float that travels up and down 2 slender wires thereby changing the resistance.
3.5 ohms = 100% full
70.5 ohms = 0%
The only way I can see to make it more accurate would be to change the thickness of the wire so that when the float was at the bottom it read 0% thereby giving a 10 ltr. reserve.
To be honest I think life is too short for me to bother.
A dip stick might be a better option!

And traditional too, I don't know if later F types had a gauge but no twins ever did. I've got a lovely stick with notches cut in it at 1/2 gallon, 1 gallon, 2 gallons, and 3 gallons (capacity is 3.5 gallons).

3.5 gallons per tank I assume?

When I get mine next month, I will do a brim to running out test and measure the mileage covered. Used this on every new motorbike in the past, just so you kinda know. If the gauge does indeed show 0% at half empty, then that's a bit of a design issue I'd say...

That is for some vintage ones, not the modern five speeder. So only the one tank handily sited above the occupants legs...
