Paint codes

Thanks for all the suggestions.

@ Adrian - my paintshop guy can colour match, but wants to do a single panel without blending in adjacent panels. Speed Silver has a mica chip in the paint and he is worried that even if he chromatically matches the colour, without the paint code he may get the fleck wrong and the reflectivity of the panel will not match.

@ Dean - it may turn out to be a SmartCar colour. The build record is in Dorset (and I am in Kent) so until I can check that I only have a comment from the guy who sold it to me that it is a Bentley colour.

Fingers crossed that the ever-helpful BHM can come up with something as the car is booked for the work tomorrow.

The paint formula and code for BALLON WHITE (code 224.009) shows that your vehicle is sprayed using a two-stage paint with a lacquer top coat, this means that during the spraying process two separate layers of different formulations of paint are used.
The first layer contains tinters and the second layer contains tinters and a pearl effect in a translucent coat.
We mix these paints in one single bottle and they are a successful match in the majority of instances but we cannot guarantee a perfect match with these types of paint as the results are unpredictable.
We don't supply the paints in two separate bottles as it would be very difficult be to try to apply more than one paint colour for touch ins.

Please contact us again if after the test has been carried out the paint is incorrect and we will of course put it right.

So maybe twotribes will have a similar issue - I will send you a PM with the details

I can't believe I am reading this, it is impossible to apply this 3 stage paint in this way, these people should be advising you correctly, the correct way is to apply the product from a Gun, it is impossible to obtain a match by touching in on these type of colours

The pearl - Xirallic or Silvers have to be applied in a set way, control of gun and Air pressure can change the effect
and shade of the colour, wiping it on with a small brush will IMHO achieve a worse result than the initial scratch.

Solid colours such as REDS WHITES BLUES BLACKS can effectively be touched in.

I would like to take the product back to these people who take your money and challenge them to apply it with a good result

That does sound a bit Dobin to me. If I could paint a few panels, scratch them and then test it I might go near my pride and joy but not without some concern.

I guess these modern super effect paints have an edge to them just as bodyshops used to say Metallics were a pain when they first came in.

Metallic's were a PAIN when they were first introduced, because they were applied as a 2K system not a Clear over Base. problem been you were trying to apply your Base Silver mixed in with the resin, instead of applying Base Silver then Clear after Flash off time, now this is what this company is recommending to Caget, they are mixing a Ground Coat with the Effect Colour, when in fact these should be 2 separate applications, allowing the First application to Flash off (DRY) first.

Bit like having Crumble & Custard, just make them both in the same pan and eat, there you go Lovely.
